What makes us unique?

Lots of string ensembles exhibit very high standards of musicianship and professionalism. Three big things set us apart:

1. We're just us: Tom, Nathan, and Dani.
2. We're equally at home with all the genres of music we play.
3. Cows love us.

1. We're just us.

Many event ensembles are actually small organizations comprised of a stable of musicians who get assigned to performances in different configurations based on their availability and seniority, all linked together by an organizer (and sometimes also dedicated publicists and music arrangers) under a single brand name.

We're just us: Tom, Nathan, and Dani. We do all our own correspondence, arranging, and performing. If we're not all available for your event, we don't take it. This means that while we don't have a dedicated PR person or social media team, when you book us you'll be corresponding with the same people who will arrange your musical selections and then perform them for you. No surprises!

It also means a more unique, spontaneous, and mature sound. We don't show  up to your performance to play an arrangement made by someone else with a group of coworkers; every musical arrangement, every rehearsal, and every performance is made by the three of us. The familiarity, security, and depth that results enables us to more freely improvise with each other, with our musical material, and with our audiences at any given performance.

And we're really genuinely excited to play with each other, because...

2. We're equally at home with all the genres of music we play.

Midnight on the Water started as an idea. The three of us have collectively played well over one thousand performances with classical, jazz, trad, and pop ensembles, and in those engagements we've met a lot of crossover artists: classical musicians who play arrangements of pop songs, or trad musicians who dabble in jazz. We never really met other string players who are equally at home across all those musical contexts - until we met one another! What would happen, we thought, if the three of us got together to play ALL the music in a single ensemble? After about a year of musical exploration and rehearsal, we're pretty excited about the results. All that's missing is the most important part: you, our audience!

We hope you'll take a listen to the range of music we'd love to play for you, or find out more about booking us.

3. Also, cows love us.

It's true.
